The Cornish Coast

A friend of mine, Peter Feehan, invited us to his wedding in Cornwall so we decided to make a weekend of it and see a bit of the area. They were getting married at St Gennys Church near a tiny village called Pencuke, which is not far from the town of Bude. Around Pencuke are other villages with names like Boscastle and Tintagel and nearby is the beach town of Crackington Haven.

Lower Tresmorn is a working sheep and cattle farm in a really beautiful area with fantastic views of the rugged coastline and surrounding countryside. We arrived in the evening and, after dropping our bags off, drove the narrow and DARK lanes to Crackington Haven's pub for supper. There we also met Peter's fiancé, Hazel and all of her family.

We stopped in Widemouth Bay for coffee and to watch the local world go by. It was low tide and the sea was a long way out but still a very pretty spot to be in.

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge St Gennys Church is a beautiful old Catholic Church on a cliff-top surrounded by its cemetery with graves dating back so far that the writing on the headstones of the sailors and war-dead has been worn away by the wind, weather and time. Hazel's father and grandfather are both buried at St Gennys which made it that much more special for them to be married there. The priest spoke really well and it was a very happy and fun wedding, Hazel did not stop smiling for a second.

The huge garden had a large marquee, barbeque area, bar tent and lots of tables and chairs scattered all around. Nearby was a camping field for those who wanted to stay over in tents. As part of the reception there were also fireworks, a giant bonfire and dancing in the big marquee, all of which helped keep everyone a bit warmer as the evening got to be pretty chilly.

Peter and Hazel have since moved to live in Crackington Haven so it may not be too long before we are in that area of the world again.
