Swakopmund turned out to be quite the active and adventure centre for us. Our first adventure was a magical flight through the Namibian Desert taking in small mining towns, deep canyons, dry river beds and flying right through the middle of the Spitzkoppe Mountains also known as the Matterhorn of Africa. From there we flew over vast flat plateaus towards the northern area of the Skeleton Coast. Flying down the Skeleton Coast where the ocean meets the desert it is plain to see why it is so named; we saw quite a few old shipwrecks and many whale bones, clearly equally treacherous to both man and beast! The Skeleton Coast is also home to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, a breeding ground for many thousands of Cape fur seals as well as the place where the first European, Portuguese explorer Diego Cao, set foot in Namibia in 1485. Further south towards Swakopmund is the holiday and fishing village of Henties Bay and many caravan and camping sites to cater for the tourist season. We finished this fantastic 3 hour flight by flying along the seafront of Swakopmund. |
