Back in Durban for the last week of our holiday; sun, sea, fun, family and friends was the agenda.
We spent our time just relaxing and spending time with my parents and sister. Part of that was filled by being taken to a number of fine restaurants starting with a Cuban restaurant on our first night back. On another day we were taken to "The Treehouse Restaurant" a short drive outside of Durban in the middle of a natural forest, a gastronomic delight of note! On one of the evenings Susan had invited us to a wine-tasting along with Sean and Daniela, some of the friends who we really wanted to see while in Durban. Another friend, Mandy, took us out for sumptuous steaks at a RJ's Restaurant and we met more friends at a local pub followed by a meal at the pizzeria. And for lunch one day my parents took us to Mitchells Park for a lunch of an authentic "Durban Curry". We COULD NOT go hungry if we tried!!!
Believe it or not, we did have time for doing things other than eating. We spent Saturday morning at the local craft market where we bought some authentic "Durban Curry powder" to bring back to London. Annie also found a very cute animal T-shirt to buy herself. Annie and I went down to the beachfront on two more occasions for another walk along the promenade followed by a swim in the sea. To prove that there was more shopping we could do my parents took us to another of Durban's shopping centres called The Pavilion. We spent the best part of a day there and managed to "shop up a storm" of all sorts to bring home to London! Annie's Great Aunt Martha also lives in Durban so we spent a few hours one morning visiting her at her home for tea. She is a really interesting and "with-it" 85 year-old. On one of the really hot days my mother, Annie and I went for a swim in a public swimming pool nearby my parents home. What a pleasure it was, we felt completely refreshed and ready to do more (-; That afternoon our friend Kim and her daughter Erin came around to visit us for tea.
While we were in Durban we also celebrated Annie's birthday. Durban has really fantastic swimming beaches so we started the day by going down to the beach again, first for a walk along the boardwalk and along one of the piers followed by another swim in the sea. Later my parents met us for a sandwich at the "The Deck" followed by ice-cream cones on the beachfront. This was followed by being treated to a visit to a chocolate factory-shop, like "kids in a candy-shop"! (-; That evening we had Annie opening her presents before going to Susan's flat for a glass of pre-dinner wine. Susan has a huge balcony with a brilliant, unobstructed view of the whole of Durban. After wine we headed off to a FANTASTIC Portuguese restaurant for "flat" peri-peri chicken. All-in-all a fun and enjoyable birthday for Annie!!
Suddenly it was our last night in South Africa. We had supper at my parent's home and were joined by my father's cousins John and Tessa and one of their daughters. A really nice way to end off what is without a doubt one of our best South African visits.
The next morning my parents took us to the airport to fly up to Johannesburg to end our holiday as we had started it. We went to spend a few hours with my grandmother having lunch and tea before going back to the airport and flying home to London.
As you can tell, this was one of those "holidays of a lifetime" and one I can certainly recommend for South Africans and foreigners alike. I hope you enjoyed sharing in our fantastic trip!?!
