Zambia, Zimbabwe & SA - Zimbabwean Falls

The first adventure of the day was to walk across the bridge to the Zimbabwean side to see the views from that side. This was special in more ways that one. It was the first time I have been back to my birth-country since I was about 6 weeks old and my family moved from Rhodesia to South Africa.

On the bridge we stopped in the middle to watch people bungee-jumping into the gorge. It really looked very exciting but we passed on doing it ourselves.

The views of The Main Falls were quite spectacular and, despite the lack of tourism, the walkways on the Zimbabwean side are a lot better than those on the Zambian side. Unfortunately the political situation stops a lot of people from going across to the Zimbabwean side as they are afraid for their security. We wandered around all the different paths looking at The Falls from every direction and also stopped off to greet Dr Livingstone's statue. We ended up in the Rainforest area and stood in the mist from The Falls, it was a pleasure to be cooled off as the temperature was about 36 degrees Celsius, VERY HOT. We could hardly see The Falls through the mist but stood in it for quite some time before heading back to revisit some of the viewing points we had already visited to look at The Falls again.

We headed back to Zambia again via the small shops outside The Falls to buy some water. The situation is so poor that the shopkeepers share shoppers, we had to buy one bottle from each of the shops so they could each get some business! There were also a lot of people trying to sell us curios as we walked along the road and one who offered to take us back to the border on his bicycle rickshaw. We did stop off at the curio market outside the hotel complex grounds to buy a few souvenirs with much haggling as is to be expected.
